The Panzer III Ausf.M, an upgraded variant of the Ausf.L, retained the same 5cm KwK39 L/60 main gun. Notable changes included a deep-wading muffler with accompanying hatch seals, enabling it to cross water obstacles up to 1.3m deep, a significant improvement over its predecessors. The hull-mounted smoke generators were replaced by three 90mm NbK dischargers positioned on either side of the turret. Production of the Ausf.M, totaling 250 units, spanned from October 1942 to February 1943.
